The US Military believes its time to Upgrade GPS tech

Future-Proofing GPS: The U.S. Space Force’s Bold R-GPS Program

To reinforce a key pillar of modern infrastructure, the U.S. Space Force has unveiled the Resilient Global Positioning System (R-GPS). This $2 billion investment aims to create a secure, redundant GPS network, a necessary move as the GPS system—originally deployed by the U.S. Air Force nearly 50 years ago—faces heightened risks in today’s interconnected world.

The Essential Role of GPS in Modern Life

GPS is indispensable, driving efficiencies in finance, agriculture, logistics, and more. Economic gains from GPS usage have surpassed $1.4 trillion, yet an outage could lead to daily losses of up to $1 billion. R-GPS will secure these gains, ensuring GPS remains reliable even under challenging circumstances.

Industry Partnerships Boost R-GPS Development

The Space Force has enlisted commercial partners, including Astranis, Axient, L3 Harris, and Sierra Space, to accelerate R-GPS deployment. These partnerships bring fresh perspectives and technological innovations to enhance GPS stability through advanced positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) satellite systems.

Astranis’s Nexus Satellites and GPS Innovation

Astranis is building on its satellite internet experience to develop Nexus, its new line for R-GPS. By operating in medium Earth orbit, Nexus satellites are equipped for precision PNT services and represent Astranis’s broadened focus within the space technology sector.

A Rapid Deployment Strategy with “Quick Start”

The Pentagon’s “Quick Start” authority has streamlined the R-GPS program, reducing the typical three-year preparation period to just six months. This agile approach emphasizes the urgency of the mission, enabling swift progress in GPS resilience and development.

Investing for Resilience: R-GPS’s Strategic Plan

Each R-GPS satellite will cost between $50 million and $80 million, with 24 planned over five to six years. This strategic rollout begins in 2028, ensuring the Space Force has a reliable system to prevent potential outages that could disrupt the economy and national security.
