Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have once again escalated near their disputed border, but analysts warn that this flare-up is about far more than geography. The immediate dispute centers around contested land near the historic Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched along a rocky cliff on the border. The area has long been a flashpoint for nationalist pride and political distraction in both countries. While the International Court of Justice ruled in Cambodia’s favor in 2013, intermittent clashes and accusations of encroachment have persisted.
