China on Monday denied any connection to a cyber espionage group accused of launching attacks on critical infrastructure in Singapore, rejecting the allegations as “groundless” and “politically motivated.”
The denial comes after cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks identified a group, believed to be linked to China, as responsible for a series of sophisticated cyber intrusions targeting telecommunications, energy, and transport sectors in Singapore and other countries in the region.
Singapore’s authorities have not officially named a perpetrator, but the report has raised concerns about regional cybersecurity vulnerabilities and state-sponsored cyber activity.
“We firmly oppose any form of cyberattack and reject attempts to smear China with baseless accusations,” a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said at a press briefing. “China is committed to safeguarding cybersecurity and has itself been a victim of such attacks.”
The incident has heightened tensions amid broader geopolitical competition and growing scrutiny of state-backed cyber operations worldwide. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency has said it is investigating the matter and working closely with affected entities.
