Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to protest the nomination of a Trump administration official as the next U.S. ambassador to Malaysia.
The protestors, representing a coalition of civil society groups and student organizations, voiced opposition to the nominee’s past statements and policies, which they claim reflect a lack of respect for human rights, Islam, and multilateral diplomacy.
Chanting slogans and holding placards that read “Not Our Envoy” and “No to Hate Diplomacy,” the crowd called on the U.S. Senate to reject the nomination. Organizers said the nominee’s record during the Trump era, particularly on foreign policy and religious freedom, raises concerns about their suitability to represent the United States in a diverse, Muslim-majority country like Malaysia.
“The U.S. should send someone who values diplomacy, diversity, and mutual respect—not someone with a legacy of division and intolerance,” said Aina Rahman, a spokesperson for the protest coalition.
The U.S. State Department has not commented on the protest but has reiterated that all ambassadorial nominees undergo thorough vetting and must be confirmed by the Senate.
The nomination is currently awaiting a confirmation hearing in Washington.
