A coalition of progressive groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) held an indignation rally at the Boy Scout Circle in Quezon City on Sunday, condemning recent U.S. military actions in the Middle East and warning against further escalation in the Iran–Israel conflict.
During the demonstration, protesters burned a U.S. flag in a symbolic act of protest against what they called “imperialist aggression,” following reports of American military support in alleged strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
“The U.S. has no right to interfere or escalate the conflict in the Middle East. Its actions only inflame tensions and put millions of lives at risk,” said one of the organizers over a megaphone as the crowd chanted anti-war slogans.
The protest was triggered by recent developments in the Middle East, where Israel launched heavy airstrikes against Iran, reportedly with covert or logistical support from U.S. forces. The attacks have led to dozens of deaths and fears of a regional war. Iran retaliated by launching missiles at Israeli targets, including a hospital, while also threatening American bases in the Gulf.
The demonstrators held placards reading “Stop U.S. War Mongering” and “No to Imperialist Wars”, emphasizing the Philippines’ long-standing activist opposition to perceived foreign interventionism.
A Local Voice on Global Conflict
BAYAN, one of the country’s most active left-leaning coalitions, has often rallied against U.S. foreign policy in Asia and the Middle East. Sunday’s protest aligns with their broader stance opposing the Philippines’ defense cooperation with Washington, particularly under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
“This war is not ours to fight, yet our government continues to allow U.S. military presence and influence in our region,” said BAYAN Secretary-General Renato Reyes in a brief statement issued during the event.
A Message to the Marcos Administration
The protest also served as a message to the Marcos Jr. administration, warning against deeper entanglement in U.S.-led strategic efforts against China and other regional powers. Protesters demanded an “independent foreign policy,” free from alignment with any major global bloc.
Police presence at the event was visible but non-confrontational. The protest remained peaceful, lasting approximately two hours.
A Wider Anti-War Movement?
This rally comes amid growing global demonstrations, from Europe to Southeast Asia, opposing the spiraling violence in the Middle East. Analysts note that the Iran–Israel conflict, though geographically distant, is reigniting anti-war sentiments worldwide—especially in countries with a history of resisting U.S. military presence.
Whether this local protest signals a wider regional mobilization remains to be seen, but organizers vowed to continue “educating the masses” and pressuring the Philippine government to avoid entanglement in what they describe as “imperialist wars.”
